The Teal Pumpkin Project: Inclusive Trick-or-Treating

8/17/2025

Halloween is a night that children eagerly await, but for kids with food allergies, it can be a source of worry and exclusion. That’s where the Teal Pumpkin Project comes in, an initiative designed to make Halloween more inclusive and safe for everyone.
The concept is simple: families place a teal-colored pumpkin outside their home to indicate that they are offering non-food treats. Items like small toys, pencils, glow sticks, or stickers give children with allergies the opportunity to participate fully without fear of exposure to allergens. What began as a small community initiative has now grown into a national movement.

The project not only raises awareness of food allergies but also promotes kindness and inclusivity. By participating, neighbors help ensure that every child, regardless of dietary needs, can join in the magic of trick-or-treating. It’s a reminder that Halloween is not just about candy—it’s about fun, community, and making memories together.

For families interested in joining, teal pumpkins are widely available in stores, or you can paint your own. Place the pumpkin in a visible spot, stock up on small non-food items, and watch as smiles light up the faces of children who might otherwise feel left out. A small act can make a big difference.
